NAIROBI, Kenya- The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) has condemned the circulation of a viral video showing former Deputy President and Rigathi Gachagua purchasing medication at a pharmacy in Kisii, describing it as a serious breach of patient privacy and healthcare confidentiality.
In a statement on Thursday, PSK President Dr. Wairimu Mbogo said recording and sharing footage of individuals receiving healthcare services without their consent undermines fundamental ethical obligations in the health sector and violates patients’ right to privacy.
“Pharmacies are healthcare environments, and every individual seeking medicines or professional advice is entitled to dignity, discretion, and protection of their personal health information,” the society said.
It emphasized that confidentiality is a core ethical requirement for all regulated pharmaceutical professionals.
PSK noted that it is still establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether licensed professionals were involved at the outlet where the video was recorded, and is undertaking due diligence to verify licensing status to determine appropriate regulatory action.
The society reiterated that every Kenyan, regardless of public profile or status, has the right to confidential healthcare services and urged all healthcare outlets to uphold ethical standards that protect patient dignity and privacy.
