Ruto, Leaders Mourn Raila Odinga’s Sister Beryl Achieng

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto has led national leaders in mourning Beryl Achieng Odinga, the younger sister of former Prime Minister, the late Raila Odinga, whose death on Tuesday closed a remarkable life defined by professional excellence, resilience, and public service across two African nations.

In his condolence message, President Ruto hailed Beryl as “a trailblazer whose distinguished professional journey took her across the African continent, from Kenya to Zimbabwe.”

He noted that her impact on urban development in Zimbabwe in the 1980s was both historic and transformative, pointing to her tenure as one of the earliest African urban planners in a newly independent nation.

“She made her mark as an exceptional urban planner in Zimbabwe, where her expertise and commitment contributed to significant developments in the country’s urban landscape,” the President said.

He further recognised her leadership at the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC), where she served as Chairperson from 2020, describing her as a reform-minded administrator who worked to strengthen service delivery.

“We mourn the loss of a great intellectual and a pioneering woman who opened doors and lit the path for many career women,” he said. “On my own behalf and on behalf of all Kenyans, I convey heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.”

Kanu chairman Gideon Moi also joined the nation in mourning, describing Beryl as a devoted professional who made meaningful contributions in teaching, advocacy, and public service. He noted that Beryl’s service at NWSC demonstrated her commitment to integrity and efficiency in institutions serving millions of Kenyans.

“Our hearts go out to the entire Odinga family,” Moi said, assuring them of support during the difficult period.

ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna similarly conveyed the party’s sympathies. “It has been a very difficult last few days, but we are here to support you,” he said, noting Beryl’s quiet but steady presence in a family long associated with national political leadership.

The Odinga family confirmed Beryl’s passing in a statement issued by Kisumu County Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, who described her as a pillar of strength within the family and a devoted mother.

“It is with a heavy heart, but accepting the will of God, that we announce the sudden passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga,” Ruth said. She described Beryl as a loving mother to Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taure, and a deeply cherished sister to Senator Oburu Oginga, Raila Odinga, Akinyi Wenwa, and herself.

The family acknowledged the pain of the loss but expressed gratitude for the life she lived. “While we are deeply saddened by her demise and the immense void left in our lives, we take solace in the belief that she is safe in the Lord’s arms,” Ruth added.

Although Beryl generally maintained a low political profile, her legacy extends through her children, including Ami Ambala, who currently serves as a nominated MCA in the Nairobi County Assembly under the ODM party.

Beryl’s life journey reflected resilience and achievement. From her early years in Kenya to her impactful service in Zimbabwe and later her leadership roles back home, she leaves behind a legacy that blends personal courage, continental influence, and quiet dedication to public service.

Funeral arrangements will be communicated by the family in due course as leaders and citizens continue to share tributes celebrating her life and contributions.
