NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has committed to purchasing a high-capacity chapati-making machine to support Nairobi’s Dishi Na County school feeding program, which currently serves over 300,000 children.
The pledge came during Ruto’s visit to St. Teresa Girls Secondary School in Mathare on Tuesday, where students appealed to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to include chapati in their school meals.
Sakaja responded by highlighting the scale of the challenge: “That means we need a machine to produce a million chapatis every day. I have asked the President for it.”
Ruto, in turn, assured the students of his support.
“I have agreed to buy a chapati-making machine. Governor, your work is now finding where to buy it,” he said.
Chapati-making machines, commonly used in large-scale food production, vary in capacity, with some producing up to 2,000 chapatis per hour. Their prices start at approximately Ksh. 150,000.
If acquired, the machine would significantly enhance the Dishi Na County program, which was launched to provide daily hot meals to public school children across Nairobi.
