NAIROBI, Kenya – Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has distanced himself from the Kenya Kwanza government, asserting that he has no intention of accepting a Cabinet position under President William Ruto.
The outspoken ODM senator, a vocal critic of Ruto’s “broad-based government,” made the remarks during a panel discussion on Citizen TV’s Daybreak program on Thursday.
Sifuna’s comments come after his fellow ODM senator, Tom Ojienda, hinted at Sifuna’s interest in the recently filled Gender Cabinet Secretary post.
In response, Sifuna humorously quipped, “I am loved by the ladies, which is not something we can say about him.”
Reaffirming his stance, Sifuna clarified, “I have no interest in serving in a government like the one in power. I would never take a Cabinet position. I am not Makau Mutua or any of those people,” referencing other figures who have joined Ruto’s government from the opposition camp.
Sifuna also made it clear that he would not be vying for any other position in the 2027 general elections, stating, “I am happy serving the people of Nairobi as senator, and even in 2027, I will not seek any other office than the Nairobi senatorial position.”
Senator Edwin Sifuna: Tom Ojienda has claimed that I wanted to be the CS for the Ministry of Gender because he knows I am well-liked by women, which is not something we can say about him. However, I have no intention of serving in the current govt #CitizenDayBreak @TrevorOmbija
Sifuna and other ODM leaders have accused party members working with the government of failing to hold the President accountable for the issues affecting ordinary Kenyans.
In turn, Ruto’s allies have labeled them saboteurs of the “broad-based government” arrangement.
