NAIROBI, Kenya — Over 40 African nations gathered in Nairobi this week for a high-level defence forum aimed at strengthening collaboration among Special Operations Forces (SOF) in the face of evolving security threats across the continent.
The forum, Silent Warriors 2025, is organized by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Special Operations Forces Command in partnership with the US Special Operations Command Africa (SOCAF).
Under the theme, “Evolving threats in Africa: SOF and the future of African security,” participants will discuss pressing issues such as cyber threats, violent extremism, transnational crime, and the integration of advanced technologies including artificial intelligence and unmanned systems.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, US Embassy Charge d’Affaires Susan Burns highlighted the pivotal role of Special Forces in combating violent extremist groups and criminal networks.
“Across Africa, special operations are the tip of the spear against violent extremism organisations, traffickers, and malign actors exploiting instability,” Burns said, adding that deeper collaboration across the region is essential for both African and global security.
Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lt. Gen. John Omenda noted that Africa faces interconnected threats spanning the Sahel, Horn of Africa, Great Lakes, and Gulf of Eden regions.
He emphasized the need for joint strategies to address terrorism, organized crime, and socio-economic vulnerabilities.
“When Special Operations Forces across the world collaborate, it becomes a force multiplier, sending a clear message to adversaries that there’s no vacuum across borders,” Lt. Gen. Omenda said.
He urged participants to maintain discipline, integrity, and adherence to human rights in all operations.
The forum also features presentations by industry experts, policymakers, and military professionals on emerging technologies, counter-drone capabilities, cyber warfare, and advanced sensing systems.
US Special Operations Commander Maj. Gen. Claude Tudor praised Kenya’s leadership and commitment to African-led security solutions, describing the country as a trusted partner in counterterrorism and regional stability.
“The conversations here are grounded in shared realities and focused on tangible solutions we must develop together,” said Brig. John Kinyua, Commander of the Kenya Special Operations Forces Command.
