NAIROBI, Kenya- Suba South MP Caroli Omondi has hinted at leaving the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), saying he is considering seeking re-election in 2027 under a different political party.
“I will run for re-election on a different party. Which party it is and whom I am associating with will be discussed later,” Omondi said during an interview with NTV. “It will be a new party.”
Omondi raised concerns over the upcoming 2027 elections, saying that many candidates could be disadvantaged due to zoning policies and unfair nomination processes.
He is among the MPs who began collaborating with President William Ruto long before any formal alliances between ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) were announced.
I had a candid and insightful conversation with Paul Nabiswa, aired on NTV Jioni and NTV Tonight.
Looking ahead to 2027, Omondi urged ODM to strategize on how it will engage with UDA.
“Since UDA came to power, a lot has happened, including the Gen Z revolution, the fallout in the Mt. Kenya region, and the death of Raila Odinga, the former ODM Party leader,” he noted.
Currently, ODM is led by Oburu Oginga, Raila Odinga’s brother. Omondi questioned the leadership transition following Odinga’s death.
“ODM is getting directions and control from somewhere else. That worries me,” he said.
Omondi further criticized the party for drifting away from its founding principles.
“I don’t feel that the current ODM leadership embraces the ideological and intellectual underpinnings upon which we founded the party. ODM today is not characterised by deep thinking,” he said.
He also opposed the recent portrayal of ODM as a Luo-centric party.
“It has been a mistake over the last two months to project ODM as a Luo party. There is a big constituency of Baba out there that we need to engage with. We must stay alive to our traditional partners and understand what they think,” Omondi said.
