NAIROBI, Kenya- Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa has thrown his weight behind Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro’s confession that he was promised the Deputy President’s position in exchange for supporting the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Gachagua was impeached in October 2024, becoming the first sitting deputy president in Kenya’s history to be removed from office following a Senate vote.
President William Ruto subsequently nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki as his replacement.
In a statement, Thang’wa said Nyoro’s admission confirms what many political observers have long suspected — that several leaders from the Mt Kenya region were promised the DP position as part of a broader scheme to secure Gachagua’s removal.
Hon. Ndindi Nyoro’s confession that he was promised the DP position to impeach RiggyG confirms what many of us have known all along. A few others from Mt. Kenya were also promised the same role. Some even began acting like deputy presidents and were even provided with extra
Thang’wa claimed some leaders began acting as de facto deputy presidents even before the impeachment, receiving extra security and meeting elected officials to consolidate political support.
He cited Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata as one such leader, who was seen meeting MPs led by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro to lobby for backing.
“In essence,” Thang’wa said, “many wanted Gachagua out because they were promised his seat,” a move he attributed to a calculated strategy within the government’s inner circles.
The senator urged other leaders allegedly involved — including MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Kang’ata, ICT CS William Kabogo, Gladys Wanga, Junet Mohamed and Sylvanus Osoro — to publicly confirm or deny their participation in such discussions.
