TURKANA, Kenya – One of the most important archaeological discoveries in the world is the Turkana Boy.
Turkana Boy is a nearly complete 1.6-million-year-old hominid skeleton found in Nariokotome that has put Turkana County at the forefront of research on human evolution.
Against this backdrop, the county government of Turkana plans to install a monument to the renowned Turkana Boy at the Land’s Roundabout.
The county government says the move is a major highlight of the second phase of the beautifying work that Lodwar Municipality has started.
The project, which is a component of the town’s urban transformation program, is to improve aesthetics, increase tourism, and strengthen Lodwar’s reputation as a historical and cultural centre both domestically and globally.
A collaborative team from Public Works, the Municipality Administration, and Lands has already designated the work location and formally turned it over to the contractor.
Why Turkana County’s beautification project is most significant
The team was headed by Assistant Director for Urban Areas Management David Edoket, Municipality Deputy Manager Hon. Simon Nangiro, Project Officer Amos Lokalale, and Public Works Engineer Ignatius Kopeto.
Nangiro emphasised that the beautification project aligns with the county’s vision for urban development.
“We are committed to ensuring that this process is carried out smoothly, with proper documentation and adherence to the project scope and timelines,” Nangiro stated.
To guarantee prompt advantages for the people of Lodwar, Nangiro further asked the contractor to finish the project within the allotted three months.
The project’s goal, according to Engineer Kopeto, was to use space in a very revolutionary way to produce eye-catching monuments and colourful murals in the Municipality area.
According to Assistant Director for Urban Areas David Edoket, the goal was to build a monument that would help promote tourism and declare Turkana the cradle of humanity because of its connections to the well-known Turkana Boy.

Senior procurement official Fred Akila, Deputy Director for Lands Esther Lokitoe, Public Works staff, and the contractor were all present at the site handover.
Turkana Boy is the most complete Homo erectus skeleton ever discovered. It was recovered in July 1984 close to Lake Turkana by the late Kamoya Kimeu.
He was estimated to have been 8 to 12 years old when he passed away, and his height of 5’3″—my height—was indicative of how tall he was for his age.
The evolution of upright walking and adaption to a mobile lifestyle were hinted at by his lengthy limbs, which suggested a body designed for endurance.

Unfortunately, a dental infection that probably spread and killed Turkana Boy ended his life. But his story was far from over, even in death.
