US Designates Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorist Organization

Date:

WASHINGTON, United States — The United States has designated the Sudanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation, citing alleged involvement in mass executions of civilians and links to Iran’s elite military network.

In a statement posted on social media, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the designation was issued by the United States Department of State, which classified the group as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity.

Rubio accused the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood of receiving training and support from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a powerful military organisation that Washington already labels as a terrorist group.

“The Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood, trained and supported by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has been designated by the State Department as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist for mass executions of civilians,” Rubio said.

Escalating Pressure on Iran-linked Networks

Rubio added that Washington intends to continue using economic sanctions, legal restrictions, and diplomatic tools to weaken groups it says are supported by Tehran.

“We will continue to use all available tools to deprive the Iranian regime and Muslim Brotherhood chapters of the resources they need to engage in or support terrorism,” he stated.

The designation allows the US government to freeze assets linked to the group under US jurisdiction, restrict financial transactions, and impose criminal penalties on individuals or organisations found to be supporting it.

Sudan’s Ongoing Conflict

The move comes as Sudan continues to face a prolonged political and security crisis following the outbreak of conflict between rival military factions in 2023.

The war has displaced millions and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, according to international aid agencies.

Armed groups and political factions linked to Islamist movements have remained active within Sudan’s complex political landscape, particularly after the collapse of the country’s transitional government following the 2021 military takeover.
