NAIROBI, Kenya – As the world marked this year’s Valentine’s Day, nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri sympathised with vulnerable children.
In an emotional post shared on her official X account (formerly Twitter), the youthful lawmaker sent her heartfelt message of goodwill and love to all the vulnerable children out there.
“The abandoned kids in the orphanages, the orphans in our homes and villages, the widows, and the single mothers and fathers who feel overwhelmed by life’s burdens,” Okenyuri posted.
Why vulnerable people shouldn’t give up in life
Okenyuri, who was nominated by the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, encouraged the vulnerable people to keep pushing and never give up, as all is not lost.
“With determination, the right mindset, and focus, you can conquer all challenges and achieve your dreams. To everyone, in whatever we do, let us strive to be symbols of love to those in need, especially the vulnerable and the less fortunate. Happy Valentine’s Day,” she further said.
Today being Valentine’s Day, my heartfelt message of goodwill and love goes out to all vulnerable children out there; the abandoned kids in the orphanages, the orphans in our homes and villages, the widows and the single mothers/fathers who feel overwhelmed by life’s burdens. I…
In early February 2025, Okenyuri, who runs the Mchakato wa Usomi Program under the Nyaituga Foundation, visited Nyamuya Secondary School in Kisii County, where she donated books.
The move she said was in the spirit of making students develop a predilection for knowledge through reading their books.
“Through Mchakato, the Foundation is fully committed to having students in school reading books, gaining knowledge for critical thinking, and consequently cushioning them from child labour, gender-based violence, early marriages, teenage pregnancies, and crime that might deflect them from their dreams,” said Okenyuri, a member of KEWOPA.
How Senator Okenyuri is supporting the culture of reading
Okenyuri, who is also the vice chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Trade, Industrialisation, and Tourism, has been at the forefront of encouraging a culture of reading amongst students, a culture that has been embraced by the Foundation.
“The Mchakato wa Usomi Program is fuelled by the belief that education is key to unlocking doors; we are igniting a flame of hope in children and working towards suppressing factors that might divest these children of their right to education and a bright future,” she explained.
Senator Okenyuri maintained that she will continue to partner with individuals and organisations like Moran Publishers that share in her vision of empowering the children of Kenya so that they can have a better future.
