NAIROBI, Kenya — Motorists travelling from Nairobi to Western and Nyanza regions during the festive season have been advised to use the Nairobi–Suswa–Narok route as an alternative to the Mai Mahiu escarpment, as authorities move to ease congestion and improve road safety.
The advisory was issued as part of a nationwide traffic and security operation launched by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in collaboration with the Traffic Police Department.
According to the government, the festive season is characterised by heavy traffic volumes, increased long-distance travel, and a higher risk of road accidents, particularly along major highways.
Motorists heading through the Central region have also been encouraged to use the Nairobi–Nyeri–Nyahururu–Nakuru route to facilitate smoother and safer travel.
The traffic operation includes joint enforcement teams, enhanced visibility on highways, mobile courts where necessary, and both physical and electronic monitoring to deter violations.
In line with resolutions by the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers have been deployed alongside traffic teams to monitor enforcement and deter corruption.
Authorities urged motorists to plan their journeys in advance, adjust travel schedules while en route, observe traffic rules, and cooperate with enforcement officers.
The advisory forms part of a broader multi-agency festive season security strategy aimed at protecting lives, reducing accidents, and ensuring the uninterrupted movement of people and goods during the holidays.
Members of the public were reminded to report emergencies or suspicious activity through toll-free numbers 999, 911, or 112.
