NAIROBI, Kenya – National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on the newly reconstituted Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to urgently begin restoring public confidence in the electoral body and commit to its constitutional mandate of delivering credible elections.
Speaking this morning after hosting the new IEBC chairperson and commissioners at Parliament Buildings, Wetang’ula emphasized that the commission must rise to the occasion and reclaim its place as the bedrock of democracy in Kenya.
“You must move with speed and begin the journey of restoring the public’s confidence in the institution,” Wetang’ula told the commissioners. “The IEBC is the cornerstone of free, fair, verifiable and credible elections, and the country expects nothing short of impartiality, integrity and professionalism from you.”

The Speaker reminded the commissioners of the weight of the oath they took upon assumption of office and urged them to uphold it in both letter and spirit.
He said that in a democratic society, public trust in the electoral process is central to political stability and national development.
“In an era where credible electoral processes underpin political stability and development, Kenyans are counting on the commission to safeguard the sanctity of the vote,” Wetang’ula said. “You must operate with full transparency and accountability at all times.”
The meeting brought together parliamentary leadership and members of the National Assembly, marking the first official engagement between lawmakers and the newly appointed IEBC team since their swearing-in.
The IEBC, which has undergone months of restructuring, is expected to play a key role in overseeing electoral reforms and preparing for upcoming by-elections and the 2027 general election.
The Speaker’s remarks underscore the growing pressure on the commission to re-establish its credibility following years of public skepticism and political tension surrounding its operations.
The new commissioners now face the challenge of rebuilding trust, strengthening institutional integrity, and delivering on their constitutional duty to protect the voice of every voter.
