NAIROBI, Kenya – The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has dismissed its Vice Chairperson, Wambui Nyutu, over what it termed persistent involvement in partisan political activities—conduct the commission says violates her oath of office and constitutional obligations.
The decision was announced Tuesday by NCIC Chairperson Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia, following a Special Commission Meeting held on July 22, where commissioners unanimously agreed that Nyutu’s conduct had become “untenable.”
“The Commission unanimously resolved to relieve Ms. Nyutu of her role as Vice Chairperson of the Commission with immediate effect,” Kobia said in a statement.
Nyutu has been under internal investigation since January, when the NCIC convened a series of meetings to address concerns over her political engagement, including public statements and appearances that suggested affiliation with a political party.
While she initially denied the claims and later issued an apology—promising to refrain from partisan politics—Kobia said Nyutu had since reneged on that commitment.
“Ms. Wambui Nyutu has since been involved in partisan political activities, including participation in meetings affiliated with a particular political party,” said Kobia. “These actions are in breach of the expectations of impartiality required of all Commissioners.”
The commission has now initiated the formal process to remove Nyutu from her role as Commissioner, invoking Section 23 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (CAP 7N) and other relevant legal frameworks. The appointing authority is expected to be formally notified.
In the meantime, the Commission has elected Dr. Dorcas Kedogo as the new Vice Chairperson, effective immediately.
NCIC also distanced itself from any recent public political remarks made by Nyutu, stating they were made in her personal capacity and do not reflect the Commission’s position.
“The NCIC reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the principles of impartiality, integrity, and professionalism in the execution of its mandate,” Kobia said.
