NAIROBI, Kenya – Zubeida Kananu is back at the helm of the Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG) — and she’s not taking the trust for granted.
The KTN News journalist on Saturday, May 24, secured a second term as KEG president after a tightly contested virtual vote, beating her closest challenger, Citizen TV’s Yvonne Okwara.
“I am deeply honoured and sincerely grateful for the trust you have placed in me,” Kananu said in a heartfelt statement, calling the fresh mandate an endorsement of shared values and a vision for a more resilient and independent press.
With the vote now behind her, Kananu is already looking ahead — promising to build on her first term and rally journalists from all corners of the industry. She pledged to champion inclusivity, professionalism, and collaboration in an era where the media faces increasing pressure from political and economic forces.
In a show of leadership maturity, Kananu saluted Okwara for running what she termed a spirited and dignified campaign.
“Your participation reflects the strength of our democratic values and the passion we all share for the future of our profession,” she noted, adding she looked forward to working with her to strengthen the Guild further.
Kananu’s renewed term comes at a time when media professionals are grappling with threats to press freedom, dwindling revenues, and technological disruption. But she made it clear: unity is the Guild’s greatest strength.
“I am committed to working with each and every one of you, regardless of our backgrounds or viewpoints. The strength of this Guild lies in our unity and shared resolve.”
