NAIROBI, Kenya- Ahmednasir Abdullahi, a popular Kenyan lawyer and known supporter of President William Ruto says the current protests over the controversial Financial Bill 2024 should be a wake-up call for the government.
In a statement on his X platform, Abdullahi told the President that the people’s reaction is a clear indication that, “all is not well.”
“This smells like the coffee moment for President Ruto,” he said. “But he also has a golden opportunity for correction, rebirth and new direction.”
Similar sentiments have been made by notable figures like lawyer Miguna Miguna.
He made the sentiments ahead of a massive protest against the Financial Bill 2024.
The protest has mostly attracted young Kenyans, who have used both the streets and social media platforms to ask Members of Parliament to reject the bill.
The Finance Bill has led to a smouldering rebellion across the country, with protests erupting in various parts.
The bill’s critics argue that it reflects a disconnect between the government and the people, as it appears to prioritize economic interests over the well-being of ordinary Kenyans.
Despite President William Ruto acknowledging the democratic right of Kenyans to protest, he has remained silent on the incidents of police brutality witnessed early this week.
Human rights organizations, the Law Society of Kenya, and the Media Council of Kenya have all condemned the National Police Service for its heavy-handed approach.
