NAIROBI, Kenya – A vehicle in President William Ruto’s motorcade struck and killed a British national along Ngong Road on Thursday, prompting police to arrest the driver.
The victim, identified as 79-year-old Edgar Charles Frederick, was attempting to cross the road near Adams Arcade when he was hit by the government vehicle.
Witnesses at the scene claimed that Frederick, who reportedly had hearing difficulties, did not hear the traffic officer’s warnings as the convoy approached.
Authorities confirmed that the driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody but later released on cash bail pending court proceedings.
The government vehicle involved in the fatal accident was towed to Kilimani Police Station for further examination as investigations continue.
The National Police Service (NPS) has urged all road users, including motorists and pedestrians, to exercise caution to prevent similar tragedies.
“The National Police Service urges motorists, pedestrians, and all other road users to exercise extreme caution and adhere to traffic rules to prevent accidents,” NPS said in a statement.
Frederick’s body was taken to Lee Funeral Home, where a postmortem examination is expected to be conducted.
