Gachagua Urges Leaders to Honor Voter Mandates and Address Public Grievances

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on elected leaders to prioritize their constituents’ needs and respect the mandate given to them through the ballot.

Speaking during a church service at PCEA Mwiki in Kasarani Constituency, Gachagua emphasized the importance of humility, accountability, and responsiveness in leadership.

Gachagua expressed concern over what he termed the arrogance and detachment of some leaders, warning that dismissing voters’ grievances is both disrespectful and counterproductive.

“Leaders must listen to the people, act as expected, and remain accountable. Ignoring their grievances is not only disrespectful but goes against the mandate given by the voters,” he stated, urging leaders to stay true to their responsibilities.

He also criticized the government for advancing unpopular projects that were not part of the Kenya Kwanza manifesto, suggesting that leaders align their priorities with citizens’ expectations.

Turning his focus to the ongoing stalemate surrounding the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Gachagua warned that delays in appointing new commissioners could lead to mistrust and leave the country unprepared for future elections.

“The failure to reconstitute the electoral body is in bad faith. Let all concerned parties act swiftly to ensure there is no mischief in the process,” he remarked, adding that timely reforms are critical for safeguarding electoral integrity.

Gachagua also addressed the re-emergence of illicit alcohol, attributing its resurgence to the government’s failure to sustain previous crackdowns.

He reflected on his own efforts before his impeachment, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance. “The fight against illicit brews must remain a priority for the well-being of our society,” he said.
