ACCRA, Ghana – A Ghanaian Member of Parliament has raised concerns following violent protests in Kenya over new tax laws.
The protests, which saw demonstrators storm parliament, have ignited a continent-wide debate on legislative accountability and public trust.
Speaking in parliament, the Ghanaian MP urged colleagues to reconsider their approach to lawmaking, fearing similar public backlash could occur in Ghana.
“Kenyan public are beating up Members of Parliament for passing bad laws. Mr Speaker, it is a serious matter. I saw colleagues Members of Parliament beaten to a pulp.” the MP declared solemnly.
“Mr Speaker, advise us on how to pass good laws to avoid being beaten by the public. We should be worried. It is not a laughing matter. It is not a joke.”
The viral video posted by an international journalist Kennedy Wandera on his X account captures the intensity of the protests and has sparked widespread discussion on social media.
Many Kenyan youths have been questioning the effectiveness of legislative processes and demanding greater transparency and accountability from their elected officials.
Parliamentary sessions across Africa are now under scrutiny with calls for reforms to ensure laws are not only fair but also reflect the needs and aspirations of the people they serve.
