Jamhuri Day Awards: Top Security Officials Among Presidential Honorees

NAIROBI, Kenya- On this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations, President William Ruto recognized a host of distinguished Kenyans with state honors, applauding their exceptional contributions to the nation. 

Among the awardees were Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, philanthropist Shah Pankaj, and trailblazers in various fields, reflecting Kenya’s rich tapestry of talent and service.

Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu received the prestigious Elder of the Golden Heart (EGH), Kenya’s second-highest honor, for her long-standing judicial career and commitment to justice. 

Mwilu, who has served as Deputy Chief Justice since 2016, expressed gratitude for the recognition, underscoring the judiciary’s critical role in upholding the rule of law.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja was awarded the Moran of the Golden Heart (MGH) for his exemplary service in law enforcement, including leading the successful DusitD2 counter-terrorism operation in 2019. 

Chief of Defense Forces General Kahariri Charles Muriu also stood out, earning the Second-Class Elder of the Golden Heart (EGH), alongside other military leaders like Lieutenant General Tarus David Kimaiyo Chemwaina, who were recognized for their contributions to Kenya’s defense sector.

Philanthropist Shah Pankaj, celebrated for his relentless charity work, was conferred the Chief of the Burning Spear (CBS). 

Through his organization, Pankaj has served over 30 million meals in 2024 alone, reaching Kenya’s most vulnerable populations, including orphans and children with disabilities. His dedication highlights the impact of community-driven philanthropy in transforming lives.

Kenyan mathematician Purity Muthoni Ngina, the youngest Ph.D. holder in mathematics, was awarded the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS). Her contributions to academia and mentorship continue to inspire young scholars across the country.

In the entertainment industry, Sarah Hassan, renowned actress and TV host, received the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) for her pivotal role in promoting Kenya’s film and creative arts sector. Her efforts have significantly elevated Kenya’s cultural footprint on the global stage.

President Ruto’s address emphasized the importance of celebrating those who serve selflessly, stating, “These individuals embody the spirit of resilience, innovation, and compassion that defines Kenya.”
