Karua, Matiang’i Rebuke Rising Insults as Ruto–Gachagua Feud Escalates

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — PLP Leader Martha Karua has criticised the growing trend of personal attacks among political leaders, warning that it risks eroding the dignity of public office and undermining meaningful democratic discourse.

In a statement, the People Liberation Party leader urged politicians to shift from insults to reasoned debate, saying leadership must reflect decorum and intellectual integrity.

“A leader who resorts to insults instead of reasoning demeans the office they hold. Do let your PhD reflect in your actions and utterances,” she said.

Karua also questioned what she termed as increasing state interference in private institutions, citing the controversy surrounding The Nairobi Hospital. Her remarks follow recent comments by William Ruto, who pledged government intervention to restore order at the facility amid a deepening governance and legal dispute.

According to the State House, the President’s involvement was prompted by petitions from stakeholders within the Kenya Hospital Association, raising concerns over leadership wrangles and operational challenges.

President Ruto has maintained that no individual or group would be allowed to “hold it hostage.”

But Karua challenged the legal basis of such intervention. “Pray, which of our laws gives you power to interfere with the running of a private institution?” she posed, further accusing the government of failing to address broader governance concerns, including corruption and alleged misuse of public funds.

Her remarks come against the backdrop of an intensifying political fallout between President Ruto and his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua, which has increasingly taken a personal tone. What began as a political disagreement has evolved into a public exchange of sharp and, at times, body-related insults.

Gachagua, who has declared his intention to block Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027, recently mocked the President’s physical appearance during a public address—remarks widely interpreted as both personal and politically charged.

Ruto responded days later with equally blunt comments, urging critics to “go to the gym” and criticising their appearance and habits—statements that have drawn backlash from across the political divide.

Amid the escalating rhetoric, Jubilee presidential aspirant Fred Matiang’i also weighed in, calling for restraint and respect in leadership. Speaking in Narok, Matiang’i said he had deliberately avoided personal attacks out of respect for the presidency.

“I respect the office of the President. Katiba yetu inaonyesha wazi that the person in that office is a symbol of national unity,” he said, referencing constitutional principles on leadership and national cohesion.

Matiang’i warned that the tone of political engagement risks setting a poor example, particularly for younger generations. “Kenyans expect those who seek leadership to be measured, mature and decent—even in the language we use,” he said.

He added that persistent public insults could erode confidence in leadership and weaken the moral authority of public institutions. “Watoto wetu hawawezi kuamka asubuhi watupate tukitukanana. That destroys the image of leadership,” he noted.

The developments also raise broader constitutional questions around leadership standards, particularly under Chapter Six of the Constitution, which emphasises integrity, dignity, and accountability in public office.
