Ayatollah Ali Khamenei: History Behind the Dead Iran’s Supreme Leader

Date:

TEHRAN, Iran — Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader for more than three decades, has been killed in reported US and Israeli airstrikes, according to Iranian state media.

The death of the 86-year-old cleric would mark a seismic turning point in Middle East geopolitics and the future of the Islamic Republic. Khamenei had led Iran since 1989, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in the region.

Khamenei succeeded Ruhollah Khomeini, who led the 1979 Islamic Revolution that overthrew the shah and established the Islamic Republic. While Khomeini authored the revolution, many analysts argue that Khamenei ultimately accumulated greater institutional power over time.

From Revolutionary Cleric to Supreme Authority

Born in Mashhad in 1939, Khamenei studied in Najaf and Qom before embracing revolutionary Islamist ideology. He became a close follower of Khomeini and supported the doctrine of velayat-e faqih — guardianship of the Islamic jurist — which vests sweeping political and religious authority in a supreme leader.

Following the 1979 revolution, Khamenei rose quickly through the ranks. He helped organise the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), survived an assassination attempt in 1981, and served as Iran’s president from 1981 to 1989 during the Iran–Iraq war.

After Khomeini’s death, Khamenei was selected by the Assembly of Experts to become the supreme leader, despite controversy over his clerical rank. Constitutional amendments expanded the powers of the office, giving him authority over the armed forces, judiciary, state broadcasting, and key oversight bodies.

Consolidating Power

Over 36 years, Khamenei consolidated control over Iran’s domestic and foreign policy. He backed hardline policies, curtailed reformist movements, and repeatedly suppressed mass protests, including the 2009 Green Movement and the 2025–26 demonstrations over economic hardship.

Under his leadership, Iran expanded its regional influence through allied groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis. He also oversaw negotiations related to Iran’s nuclear programme, including the 2015 nuclear deal, before relations with the West deteriorated sharply.

Tensions escalated significantly following renewed US sanctions and regional confrontations. Analysts say the recent military strikes that reportedly killed him represent the most direct challenge yet to Iran’s leadership structure.

Uncertain Future

Khamenei’s death leaves Iran facing a potentially volatile succession process. The Assembly of Experts is constitutionally mandated to appoint a new supreme leader, but the political climate and external military pressure could complicate that transition.

International observers warn that the killing of a sitting supreme leader — if officially confirmed — could trigger broader regional instability, retaliation, and further diplomatic fallout.

Unlike the massive funeral crowds that followed Khomeini’s death in 1989, analysts suggest public reaction inside Iran may be more complex, shaped by years of economic strain, political repression, and generational change.

As the situation develops, the geopolitical implications of Khamenei’s reported death are expected to reverberate far beyond Iran’s borders, reshaping alliances and security calculations across the Middle East.
