Machakos County Averts Nurses’ Strike with Promotion Agreement

Date:

MACHAKOS, Kenya – The Machakos County Government has successfully averted a looming nurses’ strike by resolving promotion-related grievances raised by the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN).

The strike, initially scheduled to begin next week, has been called off following an agreement between the county and union officials.

County Secretary Muya Ndambuki announced the breakthrough during a press briefing on Saturday at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

He was joined by County Health Chief Executive Committee Member Justus Kasivu and union representatives.

“The governor tasked us with the duty of negotiating with the nurses with strict instructions that the health of Machakos residents was paramount. We are happy to announce that there will be no strike on Monday as we have reached a breakthrough on the matter,” Ndambuki stated.

The resolution followed intensive consultations with the union officials and a committee appointed by Governor Wavinya Ndeti.

The nurses’ demands, detailed in a strike notice issued on December 23, 2024, have been addressed, leading to a phased promotion plan.

Promotion Details:

1. Promotions will be implemented within the 2024-25 Financial Year in two phases, starting January 31, 2025.

2. Priority will be given to staff nearing retirement, those above 55 years, and nurses who have faced historical promotion injustices.

3. A total of 121 nurses fall under this category, with two staff members set for immediate promotion.

4. Suitability interviews for 80 nurses above 55 years will be conducted, with promotion letters issued by March 17, 2025.

5. Additionally, 28 enrolled nurses will receive promotion letters by the same date.

6. Phase one will see a total of 231 nurses promoted.

CECM Kasivu reassured residents that hospital services would continue without interruption.

“The strike slated for this coming Monday on the 13th will not take place. Those seeking treatment should go to the hospitals and will be attended to,” he confirmed.

Kasivu also noted that the county government had allocated a budget for the promotions and expressed gratitude to the negotiation teams.

He emphasized that hospitals are well-stocked with medical supplies to ensure patients receive proper care.
