NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has vehemently denied speculations that he is aligning with President William Ruto as the central region’s new political point man.
Speaking on Hot 96’s HOT Breakfast show, Njenga made it clear that his focus is on unity rather than political alliances.
“I am aligning with Kenyans. Right now we want unity. I was an Azimio person,” Njenga affirmed, distancing himself from the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Njenga’s reemergence in the political scene coincided with the recent impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, sparking rumors that Njenga might challenge Gachagua’s influence and potentially bolster support for President Ruto in the vote-rich central region.
Njenga also took the opportunity to address allegations made by Gachagua, who accused the State of backing the resurgence of the Mungiki gang to instigate unrest in the region.
Gachagua urged his allied MPs to file a petition with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the alleged resurgence.
“He wants to take me to The Hague yet he is toothless. That is just yapping,” Njenga retorted, dismissing Gachagua’s claims.
In the interview, Njenga condemned the ongoing cases of abductions in the country, sharing his own harrowing experience.
“I have been a victim of abduction. I was taken in for 7 days when planning Raila-led protests, driven 300 kilometers by hooded men. It is not a good thing; the government should stop it,” he recounted.
Njenga’s statements come amidst a charged political atmosphere, with various leaders and factions vying for influence and control in the central region, a key battleground in Kenya’s political landscape.
