10 Killed, 11 Injured in Truck Crash at Malaha Junction on Webuye–Kitale Highway

Date:

BUNGOMA, Kenya — At least 10 people have been confirmed dead and 11 others injured following a devastating road accident at Malaha Junction along the Webuye–Kitale Highway in Bungoma County.

The fatal crash occurred on Monday night after a truck reportedly lost control and rammed into several vehicles, including a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) matatu and a boda boda, triggering a deadly chain collision.

According to the Western Region Traffic Police Commander Walter Cheboren, several victims died on the spot, while others sustained serious injuries.

Witnesses recount terrifying moments

Witnesses at the scene said the truck appeared to lose control before ploughing into vehicles near the busy junction.

The impact of the collision left bodies scattered on the road as rescuers and other motorists rushed to assist victims before emergency responders arrived.

Images and videos circulating online showed the matatu badly mangled, with emergency teams working to extract victims from the wreckage.

Survivors were rushed to hospitals in the nearby Webuye area where they are currently receiving treatment.

Traffic police moved quickly to clear the debris and restore traffic flow along the busy highway.

Leaders call for improved road safety

Following the tragedy, Tim Wanyonyi, Member of Parliament for Westlands, expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones in the crash.

“This tragedy is a sobering reminder of the fragility of life. I urge all road users to exercise extreme caution and vigilance,” Wanyonyi said.

The legislator also called on road safety and transport authorities to introduce urgent safety measures along the Malaha–Lugulu stretch of the highway to prevent future accidents.

“I urge all motorists and road users to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, particularly at known blackspots and busy junctions. Safety must always be our primary concern,” he added.

Investigations launched

Motorists have long flagged Malaha Junction as a risky section of the Webuye–Kitale highway due to heavy traffic and high-speed vehicles frequently using the route.

Police have since launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash as families begin the difficult process of identifying victims.
