Mandera Bloodshed: Six Family Members Killed in Midnight Attack Amid Rising Tensions

Date:

MANDERA, Kenya – At least six people were killed in a brutal attack on a village near the Kenya-Ethiopia border in Mandera County on Wednesday night.

The incident took place in Malkamari Division, near the Muruthow area of Banisa constituency.

Police attributed the attack to interclan fighting, with tensions escalating after a similar attack last week where three people lost their lives.

The victims, all from the same extended family, were shot at by rifles in an attack that occurred between Choroqo and Malkamari around midnight.

Among those killed were Kheira Muhumed Abdirahman, 38, Abdifatah Haji Issack Hassan (4), Imran Haji Issack (3), Aisha Haji Issack (6 months), Halima Abdi Guhad (42), and Kheira Mohamed Muhumed (8).

The victims were buried on Thursday according to their tradition and religious beliefs.

The attack left four others injured, who were rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Despite the high tensions in the area, no arrests have been made, although investigations are ongoing.

The delayed communication, due to poor mobile network coverage in the region, hampered early reporting of the incident.

Local leaders, including Nominated Member of Parliament Suleka Hulbaale, condemned the attack, calling it a senseless act of violence.

Hulbaale urged security agencies to enhance their operations in the region to prevent further violence and protect civilians.

She also appealed to community leaders to work together for peace and reconciliation.

Interclan fighting is common in the region, often centered around competition for resources, which has fueled tensions and violence in the past.

Security efforts are being intensified to address the ongoing threat to peace and stability in the area.
