NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has issued a stark warning over the use of goons in political mobilisation, saying it poses the biggest threat to Kenya’s security and democracy ahead of the 2026 and 2027 elections.
In a statement shared on Friday, Kuria said he had held discussions with members of the diplomatic community and cautioned that individuals involved in organising or financing political violence could face international prosecution.
“The biggest risk to Kenya’s security and democracy is the use of goons as tools of political mobilisation,” Kuria said, adding that some actors could ultimately end up at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
He warned that accountability mechanisms would be harder to evade this time, noting: “This time round no witnesses will disappear.”
Kuria’s remarks come amid growing concern over rising political tensions and fears of a return to election-related violence, as leaders and civil society groups call for peaceful political engagement and adherence to the rule of law.
