NAIVASHA, Kenya — The government has deployed more than 1,000 police officers to provide security during the ongoing Safari Rally Kenya in Naivasha, Nakuru County.
In a statement issued Thursday, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration said the officers drawn from various security formations will be stationed along rally routes, spectator zones, and key access roads throughout the competition.
The rally, one of the most prominent motorsport events in Africa, began on Thursday and will run until Sunday, March 15.
“More than 1,000 police officers drawn from various formations will be deployed across rally routes, spectator zones and key access roads to maintain security, manage crowds and support traffic control operations,” the ministry said.
Authorities noted that temporary traffic management measures and road diversions will be implemented along designated rally routes and surrounding access corridors during the competition period.
The security operation is being coordinated by a multi-agency team bringing together several government agencies to ensure smooth management of the international event.
These include the National Police Service, National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
The agencies will work closely with county authorities and rally organisers to coordinate security operations, traffic management, and public safety measures throughout the event.
Traffic Advisory
The government has warned motorists and members of the public to expect temporary traffic disruptions during the rally.
Drivers travelling along the Nairobi–Naivasha highway who do not have business in Naivasha have been advised to consider alternative routes to avoid congestion around rally stages.
Recommended detours include the Nairobi–Limuru–Flyover–Njabini–Ol Ndondori–Lanet–Nakuru route and the Nairobi–Mai Mahiu–Narok–Nakuru corridor serving Western Kenya.
Authorities have also cautioned motorists to exercise extra vigilance due to heavy rainfall currently being experienced in several areas.
“In light of the prevailing heavy rainfall in several areas, motorists are further advised to exercise caution and remain alert to possible localised flooding,” the statement said.
Spectators attending the rally have been urged to watch the competition only from designated spectator zones and strictly follow safety instructions issued by security officers and event marshals.
Officials warned that accessing restricted rally tracks or operational zones could pose serious safety risks.
Event marshals and security personnel will be stationed at strategic points along rally routes to guide spectators and enforce safety measures during the four-day competition.
