NAIROBI, Kenya- The University of Nairobi (UoN) has reclaimed its position as Kenya’s top university after outperforming Kenyatta University across four key academic disciplines in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026.
The rankings, released this week, evaluate universities across 11 major academic fields, offering a global snapshot of teaching quality, research impact, and academic reputation.
How UoN Beat Kenyatta University
According to the report, Kenyan universities featured in five subject areas, with UoN emerging dominant in four of them.
UoN ranked top nationally in:
- Business and Economics
- Medical and Health
- Physical Sciences
- Social Sciences
Kenyatta University (KU), meanwhile, took the lead in Life Sciences, placing it ahead of UoN in that specific discipline.
The results mark a turnaround for UoN, which had previously been edged out by KU in recent rankings, restoring its status as the country’s leading institution in research-heavy fields.
