Weatherman Warns of Heavy Rains, Storms and Strong Winds in Parts of Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an alert warning of heavy rainfall, scattered storms, and strong winds across several parts of the country from Tuesday, August 12, to Monday, August 18, 2025.

The forecast shows the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, and parts of the North-western region will be hardest hit, with chances of localised thunderstorms in some areas.

“Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions may occur over parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, South-eastern Lowlands, and the Rift Valley,” the department said.

Temperature Swings
Daytime highs could exceed 30°C in the North-eastern and North-western regions, while some areas in the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and around Mt Kilimanjaro may experience nighttime lows below 10°C.

Strong Winds Alert
Winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s) from the south to south-east are expected to hit the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western parts of the country.

Regional Highlights

  • Western Kenya & Rift Valley: Counties such as Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Kericho will see afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with occasional morning and evening rain. Daytime temperatures will range between 28°C and 30°C, dropping to around 11°C at night.
  • North-western Kenya (Turkana, Samburu): Mostly sunny early in the week, with isolated afternoon storms and night showers expected toward the weekend. Highs may reach 35°C, with lows near 8°C at night.
  • Central Kenya & Nairobi: Cloudy mornings giving way to sunny spells, with some afternoon showers. More widespread rain likely on Saturday. Minimum temperatures may fall to 8°C midweek, with highs around 26–27°C.
  • North-eastern Kenya (Mandera, Garissa, Wajir): Dry and sunny for much of the week, with light showers possible by Saturday night. Highs will remain between 33°C and 35°C.
  • South-eastern Lowlands: Cloudy mornings followed by sunny afternoons, with little rainfall expected. Highs between 28°C and 30°C, cooling to around 9°C at night by the weekend.
  • Coastal Region (Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu): Warm and humid with sunny intervals and occasional light rain on Friday and Saturday. Highs between 28°C and 30°C, with nights ranging from 19°C to 21°C.

The public has been urged to stay alert, especially in flood-prone areas and regions expecting strong winds. Mariners have also been warned of rough sea conditions during the forecast period.
