NAKURU, Kenya – The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released an update on the inquiry into the death of Cyrus Jirongo, who tragically died in a road accident.

Investigators traced and interviewed individuals linked to motor vehicle registration number KDJ 564E, a white Toyota Probox, which was captured on CCTV at Eagol Petrol Station shortly after Jirongo had visited the station.

Statements recorded by detectives indicate that the vehicle is registered to William Mutai, Member of County Assembly for Keringet Ward, and is managed by his wife.

It is alleged that on December 11, 2025, the car was hired out to Denis Kipyegon Koech, who was transporting family members to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi to receive their son returning from New Mexico University in the United States.

According to Koech, the family left Keringet on December 12 and returned shortly after midnight. While en route near Karai, they stopped at Eagol Petrol Station to refill wiper fluid due to poor visibility.

“We saw Jirongo leaving the station, and moments later we heard a loud bang and saw a bus dragging his vehicle,” Koech said.

The family said they assisted by illuminating the accident scene with their vehicle’s headlights at the request of a petrol station attendant but did not exit their car.

“We left the scene after other motorists arrived and traffic began to build, and returned home around 6:00 a.m.,” Koech added. They later learned of Jirongo’s death.
