KISUMU, Kenya — Three people were killed and at least 19 others injured on Sunday after a road accident involving a vehicle from the convoy of Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale at Otonglo in Kisumu.
The Ministry of Health (Kenya) confirmed the incident, saying the crash occurred near the Molasses Plant area as Duale travelled from Rarieda to Kisumu International Airport.
According to the ministry, two victims died at the scene, while a third succumbed to injuries while being transported to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.
Rescue and emergency response
Health officials said emergency responders quickly coordinated rescue operations following the crash.
“Following the accident, immediate rescue efforts were coordinated, leading to the evacuation of more than 19 injured persons to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention,” the ministry said in a statement shared on X.
“Unfortunately, two fatalities were confirmed at the scene, while one additional victim succumbed to injuries while being transported to the hospital.”
All injured victims were taken to the Kisumu-based referral hospital, where they are receiving medical care.
Cause of the crash unclear
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the accident.
However, a photograph accompanying the ministry’s statement appeared to show a vehicle believed to be part of Duale’s convoy and a public service matatu, suggesting a possible collision between the two.
Investigations are expected to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
Duale confirms the incident
Later in Nairobi, during an Iftar dinner with members of the Kenya Association of Muslim Medical Professionals (KAMMP), Duale confirmed that the accident had occurred and said the injured victims were receiving treatment.
“Sorry for keeping you waiting; we are on our way from the function to Kisumu airport. There was a small accident,” Duale said, according to The Star.
“All patients belong to me; I had to tell my team to help the patients and ensure they are in the hospital. They are recovering well.”
Condolences to families
The Ministry of Health expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
The accident comes amid ongoing concerns about road safety and convoy-related crashes on Kenya’s highways, particularly involving public transport vehicles and government motorcades.
Authorities have not yet announced whether further details or a formal investigation report will be released.
