eCitizen Login Glitches Raise Concern Among Kenyan Users

Date:

Summary

NAIROBI, Kenya– Concerns are growing among Kenyan users after many reported being unable to access their accounts on the government’s digital services platform, eCitizen.

Some users say the portal is rejecting correct login credentials, while others claim their personal profile information has disappeared after accessing the system.

The government had not issued an official explanation at the time of publication.

Users Report Login Failures and Missing Data

Frustration mounted online after multiple Kenyans took to the social media platform X to report difficulties logging into their eCitizen accounts.

Several users claimed the system rejected their login credentials despite entering the correct details. Others reported a more alarming issue — accessing their accounts only to find that their personal information had disappeared from their profiles.

The development has raised concern among citizens attempting to complete critical services such as government payments and passport applications through the platform.

A quick spot check confirmed intermittent access problems. While the homepage of the portal loaded normally, attempts to log in triggered error messages such as “Forgot Password” prompts or “Account Does Not Exist”, even when users entered the correct login details.

Some users said the issues began earlier in the week.

“The portal has been experiencing problems since Monday morning and is only coming online intermittently, with the situation continuing to worsen,” one user wrote online.

A Platform Hosting Thousands of Government Services

The eCitizen portal hosts thousands of government services for Kenyan citizens, businesses, and foreign residents.

Through the platform, users can apply for passports, driving licences, business registrations, and a wide range of other public services.

Because of its central role in digital government service delivery, disruptions to the portal can affect critical administrative processes nationwide.

Despite the growing complaints, authorities had not yet released a statement explaining the current login problems or confirming whether the issue is technical or security-related.

Previous Downtimes and Possible Causes

This is not the first time the eCitizen platform has faced service disruptions.

In September 2025, the payment system used by the National Transport and Safety Authority recorded double payments and invoice retrieval failures. Earlier outages in July the same year disrupted company data services.

Another major disruption occurred in January 2025 when the Paybill 222222 payment system went offline, affecting more than 22,000 services. In 2023, a cyberattack temporarily disrupted passport, visa, and NTSA-related services integrated into the platform.

Technology experts note that website outages can occur for several reasons.

Common causes include server overload caused by sudden spikes in user traffic, system configuration errors, or faulty software updates that interfere with login authentication systems.

Other potential factors include failures from third-party payment integrations, cybersecurity incidents such as Distributed Denial of Service attacks, expired SSL certificates, or hardware failures affecting hosting infrastructure.

Until authorities provide clarity, users attempting to access government services may continue experiencing intermittent disruptions.
