NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Laikipia North Member of Parliament Mathew Lempurkel has died from injuries sustained in a tragic road accident in Rongai last week.
Lempurkel had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, where doctors fought to save his life.
Despite days of intensive treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the Maa community and the wider political fraternity.
The outspoken politician served in the 11th Parliament between 2013 and 2017 under the ODM party, where he built a reputation as a fearless advocate for land rights, cultural preservation, and the welfare of marginalised communities.
He later joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party, continuing to shape grassroots dialogue in northern Kenya.
Tributes poured in following his death. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua mourned him as a bold leader who “made valuable contributions to national dialogue and grassroots politics.” He added:
“May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may Almighty God grant strength, comfort, and fortitude to his family, loved ones, and all who cherished him.”

For the Maa community, Lempurkel’s passing is particularly significant.
He was respected for championing historical land injustices and fighting for equal development opportunities.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated by his family in the coming days.
