KDF Mourns Fallen Troops After Deadly IED Blast Hits Patrol Convoy in Lamu

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers have been killed and seven others injured after their patrol vehicle was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the Sankuri–Kiunga Main Supply Route (MSR) in Lamu County.

According to a dispatch from KDF’s Strategic Communications team, the attack occurred early Tuesday afternoon while troops were on routine patrol in the area, which has remained volatile due to sporadic incursions by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.

“Regrettably, three gallant soldiers succumbed to their injuries. These soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Kenya,” the statement read, adding that seven other officers were evacuated to specialised military medical facilities and are responding well to treatment.

KDF has launched a multi-agency operation in hot pursuit of the attackers. Security along key access routes in and out of the area has also been tightened in an effort to deny the perpetrators freedom of movement.

In what it described as a “heinous act,” the military said it is working closely with other security agencies to flush out militants hiding in the expansive Boni Forest, which has been a long-standing infiltration corridor for Somalia-based terror cells.

“Kenya Defence Forces recognises the courage demonstrated by the personnel and appreciates the swift response by multi-agency teams operating in the area,” the statement added.

The Defence Forces reiterated their resolve through Operation Amani Boni, saying troops remain “unbowed” and committed to restoring sustainable peace in the region.

The attack is the latest reminder of the persistent threat Kenya faces from insurgents exploiting porous border zones. It also comes at a time when the government has ramped up pressure on terror networks, especially in coastal and northeastern Kenya.
