NAIROBI, Kenya — Harambee Stars’ fairytale run at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) came to a painful end at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, as Madagascar edged them 4-3 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.
The night had started with hope. Alphonce Omija’s early strike sent the crowd into a frenzy, thousands of fans on their feet as Kenya looked poised to script history.
But football, ever cruel, had other plans. Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa, who had already threatened earlier, finally broke through, pulling Madagascar level and setting the stage for a nerve-wracking showdown.
Extra time only heightened the drama.
Both sides threw everything forward, but the net refused to ripple again. As the final whistle blew, the weight of the occasion shifted to the penalty spot — football’s cruel lottery.
Despite an early miss by Toky Randrianirina, Madagascar regrouped. Kenya faltered, with Mike Kibwage and Omija failing to convert their spot kicks.
The islanders held their nerve, sealing a semifinal berth in their third CHAN outing, while Kenya’s debut campaign ended in heartbreak.
Yet even in defeat, Kasarani roared. Fans stood tall, clapping and chanting long after the final whistle, saluting a team that had given them hope, pride, and unforgettable nights.
For Harambee Stars, this was a reminder that history is not built in one tournament — but tonight, they walked off the pitch with dignity, leaving Kenya dreaming of the next chapter.
