Meeting in Nyeri on Friday, the elders emphasized the pressing need for regional representation in the Kenya Kwanza government, pointing out the absence of a Cabinet minister from Nyeri County.
They unanimously endorsed Kagwe for the position of Interior Cabinet Secretary, which is currently held by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi in an acting capacity.
“We have confidence in Mutahi Kagwe’s ability to lead and serve our people effectively,” said one elder during the gathering. “His appointment would not only address the lack of representation from Nyeri but also ensure our interests are championed at the national level.”
The elders highlighted Kagwe’s extensive experience in public service, which they believe positions him as an ideal candidate for the powerful Interior docket.
Kagwe previously served as Health CS under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, spearheading Kenya’s Covid-19 response, and as Minister of Communications during Mwai Kibaki’s presidency.
His track record, they argued, demonstrates a blend of leadership, crisis management, and policy-making skills crucial for managing the challenges associated with national security and governance.
The call for Kagwe’s nomination comes as President Ruto considers a reshuffle to enhance regional inclusivity and strengthen his government.
This follows recent political shifts, including the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, which led to Prof. Kithure Kindiki’s elevation to the position of Deputy President.
Mudavadi has since held the Interior CS role in an acting capacity.
Nyeri County’s exclusion from the Cabinet has been a sore point for the region’s leadership, who see Kagwe’s potential appointment as a corrective measure.
The elders urged Kagwe to accept the role if offered, viewing it as an opportunity to serve not just the region but the entire nation.
Kagwe’s leadership during the pandemic and his insights as a former senator and minister are seen as assets for a ministry critical to Kenya’s stability and development.
