Motorcycle Rider in Charles Were Murder Arrested in Nairobi

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Detectives investigating the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were have arrested a key suspect who admitted to being paid Sh50,000 to aid the hit.

Amos Barasa Kasili was apprehended in Kibera Darajani, Nairobi, following weeks of forensic analysis and surveillance that placed him at the scene of the fatal shooting on April 30.

Authorities say he was captured on CCTV trailing the MP’s vehicle near Parliament on a motorcycle shortly before the attack.

Police say the Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number KMFZ 413W, was recovered at the time of arrest and matched the one seen in the footage.

It is believed to have been used by the assailants to follow the lawmaker before fleeing after the execution.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Barasa confessed to being the rider and told investigators he had been hired by the main suspects to facilitate the operation. His alleged reward: Sh50,000.

DCI further disclosed that Barasa often poses as a boda boda operator while moonlighting for criminal gangs.

His criminal history, investigators say, includes multiple offenses and a stint at the Industrial Area Prison—where he reportedly forged ties with some of the other suspects linked to the MP’s killing.

The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the widening probe into Were’s assassination, which has already seen multiple suspects—including the MP’s bodyguard and driver—detained or questioned over alleged links to the killers.

Barasa is currently in police custody as detectives prepare to present him in court.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to dismantle the wider network behind the high-profile murder.
