The discussions centered on the need for reforms within the African Union, as well as the upcoming election for the AUC Chairperson, a position Faki is expected to vacate in 2025.
Ruto, who took to X to share details of the meeting, emphasized the importance of strengthening the AU, especially as the continent navigates key global issues.
Their conversation also touched on the candidacy of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who has expressed interest in the AUC Chairperson role.
Odinga, a seasoned political leader, has outlined his vision for the position, including his plan to advocate for Africa’s greater representation on the global stage.
At a recent Mjadala Afrika debate in Addis Ababa, Odinga reiterated his commitment to lobbying for two permanent seats for Africa on the United Nations Security Council should he secure the AUC chairmanship.
This proposal, he argues, would better reflect the interests of the 55-nation continent in global security matters.
Ruto has publicly supported Odinga’s candidacy, urging both Kenyan citizens and international partners to rally behind his bid.
However, Odinga will face stiff competition from Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s former Foreign Minister Richard Randriamandrato.
The election, scheduled for February 2025, is set to be a pivotal moment for the African Union, as the next AUC Chairperson will play a significant role in shaping the continent’s future policies and global standing.
