Ruto Reaffirms Commitment to Women’s Empowerment on International Women’s Day

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has reiterated his administration’s dedication to breaking barriers and expanding opportunities for women and girls, as the world marks International Women’s Day (IWD).

In a statement celebrating the annual event on March 8, Ruto emphasized that gender equality is not only a matter of justice but also a key driver of social and economic progress.

“We remain resolute in our quest to break barriers, expand opportunities, and foster an environment where every woman and girl can thrive, lead, and realize their full potential,” he said.

The president also paid tribute to women in various sectors, from family life to business and leadership, acknowledging their role in shaping society and driving economic growth.

“To the women shaping strong families behind the scenes, to entrepreneurs, innovators, and change-makers driving our economy forward, to the leaders in politics and community service guiding us into the future—your courage, zeal, and vision inspire us all today and always,” he added.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “For All Women and Girls: Rights.

Equality. Empowerment,” underscores the need for universal opportunities and recognition of women’s contributions across all spheres.

Observed annually on March 8, IWD traces its origins to the early 20th century, with the first official celebrations held in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

The United Nations formally recognized the day in 1975, solidifying its place as a global platform for advocating women’s rights.

This year’s IWD also marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a groundbreaking blueprint adopted in 1995 by 189 governments at the Fourth World Conference on Women in China.

The declaration remains one of the most influential global commitments to advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls.
