Saba Saba: Kenyans Demand More Reforms After Ruto Bows to Pressure

NAIROBI, Kenya- Despite President William Ruto’s rejection of the controversial Financial Bill 2024 after immense pressure from Gen Z protestors, the country remains agitated.

Anger simmers as protests continue, with demands for deeper reforms to tackle government wastage and corruption.

The relentless wave of protests has now crystallized into a detailed program of events designed to maintain pressure on the President. 

The agenda, scheduled over the week, aims to highlight the grievances of the Kenyan people and push for meaningful changes.

Monday: United Under the Flag

Kenyans are called to pose with the Kenyan flag and share their pictures across social media platforms. The day is dedicated to a show of national unity and pride. 

The dress code is the colors of the Kenyan flag, and citizens are encouraged to hang the flag everywhere, symbolizing their collective struggle.

Tuesday: March Against Police Brutality

With the backing of the Police Reforms Working Group, protestors will visit the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to present their grievances on police brutality and killings. 

This day will also serve as a prelude to the peaceful Saba Saba Rally scheduled for Sunday, emphasizing the need for immediate police reforms.

Wednesday: Exposing Corruption

The spotlight will turn to corruption within the government. Protestors will name and shame individuals in President Ruto’s administration who have been involved in various scandals, both before and after their appointments. 

This act of public accountability aims to keep the pressure on the government to clean up its act.

Thursday: Solidarity with Grieving Parents

Protestors will gather at Jeevanjee Gardens and other locations across the country to stand in solidarity with parents who have lost their children during the protests. 

This day of mourning and reflection will underscore the human cost of the ongoing struggle.

Friday: National Day of Mourning

The Dedan Kimathi statue and other symbolic locations will be the focal points for gatherings in solidarity with parents who have lost their children. 

This day will highlight the sacrifice and pain endured by many Kenyan families.

Saturday: Saba Saba Mega Concert

A major concert is planned to rally support and maintain the momentum of the protests. The Saba Saba Mega Concert will be a cultural and political event, uniting Kenyans in their fight for justice and reform.

Sunday: Nationwide Vigils

Nairobi residents will gather at the Dedan Kimathi statue and march to Nyayo House, keeping vigil outside the building.

Similar vigils will be held in all 47 counties, symbolizing a nationwide call for change and remembrance of those lost to police violence.
