NAIROBI, Kenya — The successful performance of the fledgling Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) in recent by-elections has dramatically elevated the political standing of party leader Rigathi Gachagua, with senior figures from his former party describing him as a “master in politics” for transforming personal influence into electoral victories.
In by-elections held on Thursday, DCP clinched three ward seats: Douglas Masikonde in Narok Township, David Warui in Kariobangi North (Nairobi), and Dickson Okwiri Aduda in Kisa East (Kakamega).
The wins were interpreted as a strong endorsement of DCP and, by extension, a validation of Gachagua’s political strategy and organisational muscle.
A prominent MP from the former ruling party described Gachagua as having “emerged as a sharp political strategist,” noting that the results demonstrate his ability to build a political force from the ground up.
“These victories signal growing trust in his brand of politics — he’s no longer just an ordinary man but the architect of a rising force,” the MP said.
Supporters say Gachagua’s success lies in his grassroots approach and ability to tap into widespread voter disillusionment with traditional parties.
By delivering three wins in a single round of by-elections, he has not only raised the profile of DCP but also challenged the assumption that new or minor parties cannot compete with established political machines.
Political analysts say the results could mark a turning point for Kenya’s electoral landscape ahead of the 2027 general election. DCP’s ability to penetrate diverse regions — urban and rural — through these wins provides a template that other emerging parties may try to replicate.
For Gachagua, the victories serve as both vindication and momentum. As one observer noted, “With these wins, DCP goes from fringe to force — and Gachagua emerges as the man who can make it happen.”
Whether DCP can build on this early success — sustain growth, expand its support base, and convert by-election wins into county or national influence — remains to be seen. But for now, Gachagua’s political capital has surged, giving him leverage and credibility far beyond his former deputy-presidential profile.
