MIGORI, Kenya — Police have arrested three suspects, including the husband of a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) female officer, in connection with the murder of Second Lieutenant Cynthia Awour Mboya, whose body was found in her matrimonial home in Migori on Christmas Day.
Investigators revisited the scene of the crime on Wednesday and recovered what they described as key exhibits believed to be linked to the killing.
Among the items recovered were a black sweat pant, a grey sweater, grey sports shoes, and a navy blue cap, which police suspect were worn by the deceased’s husband on the night of the incident.
Officers also searched a shop owned by the husband at Cool Plaza in Migori town, where they recovered a panga bearing red stains believed to be blood. Police further detained the officer’s mother-in-law and the husband’s brother to assist with investigations, bringing the total number of suspects in custody to three.
“The suspects are being held as investigations continue. We are pursuing more leads and forensic analysis to establish the motive and circumstances surrounding the murder,” police said, declining to disclose further details as inquiries remain ongoing.
The motive behind the killing has not yet been established.
Second Lieutenant Mboya, aged 28, was attached to Gilgil Barracks and was on leave at the time of her death. Her body was discovered in the early hours of Christmas Day inside her home, where she was reportedly alone.
According to police reports, officers responding to the incident found her lifeless body lying on the floor next to her bed in a pool of blood. Preliminary observations indicated she had sustained deep cut wounds and showed visible signs of strangulation around the neck, suggesting a violent struggle prior to her death.

Investigators also noted that two mobile phones belonging to the deceased — a Samsung handset and a Tecno Camon 12 Pro — were missing from the house, raising questions about the sequence of events leading to the killing.
The body was later transferred to Migori County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
The incident comes amid growing concern over a spike in murder cases reported in recent days across the country, prompting renewed calls for thorough investigations and swift justice. Police say they are treating the case as murder and have assured the public that all suspects will be processed in accordance with the law as investigations continue.
