IEBC Targets Gen Z in Massive Voter Registration Drive Ahead of 2027 Polls

Date:

Nairobi, Kenya – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has relaunched continuous voter registration in a bold campaign targeting over six million young Kenyans, primarily from Generation Z, as the country gears up for the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during the launch, IEBC Chairman Erastus Ethekon said the exercise, which runs until November 27, will operate in all 290 constituencies, excluding areas preparing for by-elections. “The youth represent the future of our democracy, and their participation is crucial for legitimate electoral outcomes,” he stressed.

According to IEBC data, about 2.1 million Kenyans turned 18 in the past year alone, while nearly 7.8 million citizens aged between 18 and 27 remain unregistered. The commission aims to capture this demographic, noting its potential to reshape Kenya’s political trajectory.

The registration drive comes with streamlined processes tailored for the tech-savvy generation. Services will be available at constituency offices nationwide, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eligible citizens must present either a valid Kenyan ID card or passport, be at least 18 years old, and not already be registered voters.

In addition to new registrations, IEBC will facilitate corrections of voter details, polling station transfers, and replacement of lost cards.

The initiative has drawn attention on social media, with the commission urging young people to seize the opportunity. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), IEBC wrote: “Your vote is your power. Gen Z, this is your time to shape the future.”

Observers say the success of this drive could significantly expand Kenya’s voter base and tilt the dynamics of the 2027 race. Civic educators have welcomed the move, with activist Grace Mwikali noting: “Mobilising Gen Z is a game-changer. They are politically conscious, outspoken, and if registered, will be a decisive bloc in the election.”

As the clock ticks toward 2027, the IEBC’s ambitious outreach underscores the central role of youth in shaping Kenya’s democratic destiny.
