NAIROBI, Kenya – Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has assured Kenyans that the united opposition will unveil its presidential candidate in the first quarter of 2026, ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Delivering his end-of-year message, Kalonzo said the opposition remains firm in its mission to unseat President William Ruto, insisting that the coalition is “a government-in-waiting” bound by shared values rather than personal ambition.
“By the first quarter of 2026, the name of our presidential candidate will be made known to Kenyans. The united opposition is not just a coalition; it’s your government-in-waiting,” he said.
Pushback on Constitutional Changes
Kalonzo dismissed claims by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi that Kenya faces a constitutional crisis, warning that proposals to amend the Constitution during the 2027 elections are suspicious.
“This is so they can manipulate the process and attempt to extend their grip on power through backdoor constitutional changes. There is no constitutional crisis in our country. Nothing can stop this election based on boundaries reviews,” he said.
Critique of Ruto’s Scorecard
The Wiper leader accused the Ruto administration of failing to address the rising cost of living, unemployment, insecurity, education, and healthcare. He ridiculed the president’s promise of turning Kenya into Singapore, branding it a “mirage.”
“Ruto speaks of turning Kenya into Singapore, but what we see is Singapoor — a nation drowning in debt, overtaxed citizens, collapsed industries, and fleeing investors,” Kalonzo said.
Kalonzo outlined what he described as the opposition’s plan if elected in 2027:
- Scrap unnecessary taxes such as the Affordable Housing Levy.
- Deliver a 24-hour economy to lower the cost of living.
- Attract investors and create jobs.
- End police brutality and abductions.
- Provide affordable, quality healthcare for all.
- Recover stolen public funds both locally and abroad.
He lamented the burden of fundraising for medical bills on social media platforms, saying Kenyans deserve a healthcare system that works.
“Tumechoka kila siku kufundraise on TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp groups to give our loved ones access to quality healthcare,” he added.
Kalonzo also demanded justice for victims of anti-government protests and vowed to oppose the planned privatisation of government assets in the coming year.
