Kenya Confirms Three New Mpox Cases as Authorities Heighten Surveillance

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Ministry of Health has confirmed three new cases of Mpox, bringing the total number of infections to 41 since the outbreak was first reported in July 2024.

According to State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, health officials have so far identified 271 contacts linked to the reported cases.

Of these, 246 have completed the recommended 21-day monitoring period, while 16 remain under observation.

Nine individuals among the identified contacts tested positive for the virus.

“In addition, over 3.3 million travelers have been screened at points of entry, and 419 samples from suspected cases have been tested at the National Public Health Laboratory and partner labs,” Muthoni said in a statement. “Of these, 41 were confirmed positive, 376 returned negative results, while two samples are still under analysis.”

The government, in partnership with county authorities and health organizations, has intensified surveillance in high-risk areas.

Rapid response teams (RRTs) have been deployed to support case detection, contact tracing, investigations, and the management of confirmed cases.

To curb the potential spread of Mpox in schools, the Ministry of Health is collaborating with the Ministry of Education to enhance infection prevention measures in learning institutions.

Beyond Mpox, Kenya is also on high alert for other emerging health threats.

Muthoni noted that in January 2025, Tanzania declared an outbreak of the Marburg virus, while Uganda reported two cases and one fatality linked to the Sudan Ebola virus disease.

“With our proximity and frequent cross-border movement, Kenya remains at high risk of disease importation, requiring urgent and coordinated action,” she warned.

Travelers arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport from Tanzania and Uganda will undergo health screenings at Gate 16, and in some cases, be required to complete a Traveler Health Surveillance Form.

Muthoni urged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to public health guidelines to prevent further spread of infectious diseases.
