NAIROBI, Kenya- The Kenya Police Service has issued a public safety advisory warning of heavy rains expected to intensify across the country during the Idd-ul-Fitr long weekend.

In a statement shared on X, police urged citizens to exercise caution, citing forecasts from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

“Members of the public are advised to exercise caution—avoid flooded areas, remain vigilant on the roads, and prioritize personal safety,” the statement read.

Heavy Rains Expected Across Multiple Regions

According to the Met Department’s Heavy Rainfall Advisory (No. 03/2026), rainfall is expected to exceed 20mm within 24 hours starting March 19.

The rains are forecast to peak between March 20 and March 23, coinciding with the holiday celebrations.

Affected regions include:

  • Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley
  • Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi
  • Coastal region and South-Eastern lowlands
  • Parts of North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya

Although rainfall is expected to reduce slightly from March 24, showers are likely to persist in several areas.

Safety Advisory for the Public

Authorities have issued key safety guidelines to reduce risks during the rainy period:

  • Flood Awareness: Avoid flooded areas as water levels can rise suddenly, even in places without rainfall
  • Travel Safety: Do not drive or walk through moving water; visibility may be poor during heavy rains
  • Lightning Risks: Avoid sheltering under trees or near metal structures
  • Landslide Alert: Residents in high-risk areas such as near the Aberdare ranges and Mt. Kenya are advised to remain vigilant
