Speaking during a Thanksgiving service in Lodwar, Turkana County, on Sunday, Kindiki assured citizens that the delayed recruitment process would soon begin as part of the administration’s broader strategy to tackle unemployment and bolster security.
“Tumeweka pia employment kwa jeshi na hata ile ya polisi ilikuwa imedelay kidogo; mwezi wa tatu, we will be hiring about 5,000 police officers,” Kindiki said, blending Swahili and English.
The initiative, he emphasized, aligns with the Kenya Kwanza administration’s push to create jobs across various sectors.
Kindiki also highlighted additional employment initiatives, including informal programs like Climate Worx and expanding overseas job opportunities.
He noted that President William Ruto had tasked Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua to ensure fairness in recruitment processes while broadening the labour migration programme to underserved counties, such as Turkana.
“We are trying our best to create employment for our youths and increase household income for them,” Kindiki stated.
The recruitment drive comes amid ongoing efforts to modernize the National Police Service (NPS).
President Ruto, in recent remarks, reaffirmed his commitment to implementing technological upgrades to improve police efficiency.
These efforts include digitising police operations and investing in new equipment, vehicles, and weaponry.
Ruto underscored that the government has already allocated Ksh2 billion toward these reforms, part of a strategic plan to enhance operational outcomes and accountability.
“We need a modern police service, and technology is key to this,” Ruto said during the launch of the NPS Strategic Plan for 2023–2027. “We must ensure we digitise operations, including the famous OB (Occurrence Book).”
While touting these reforms, Ruto urged police officers to uphold professionalism and rebuild public trust, steering clear of impunity and excessive force.
Kindiki, echoing these sentiments, appealed to Kenyans to support the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy and create opportunities, particularly for the youth.
He also praised the administration’s progress in employing teachers and enhancing public sector services.
