Kenya Weather Alert: Continued Rainfall and Heavy Showers Expected Across the Country

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya– The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather outlook warning of continued rainfall across many parts of the country this week, with isolated heavy rainfall expected in specific regions.

In its forecast for April 22 to 28, the KMD indicated that heavy rainfall events are anticipated in several areas, including parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Lake Victoria Basin, Southeastern Lowlands, Central and South Rift Valley, and North-eastern Kenya.

The department cautioned that these heavy downpours could affect daily activities in some areas.

Daytime temperatures are expected to remain high, particularly in the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya, with isolated pockets in Western Kenya experiencing temperatures exceeding 30°C.

At the same time, the KMD warned that night-time (minimum) temperatures in some regions, such as the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and areas around Mt. Kilimanjaro, may drop to below 10°C.

The department also provided a weather review for the past week (April 14-20), noting that several regions had experienced heavy rainfall.

Areas such as Makueni, Machakos, Murang’a, Embu, Meru, Isiolo, Kericho, Homa Bay, Nyandarua, Bungoma, Nairobi, and Migori received rainfall amounts exceeding 50mm in 24 hours.

Additionally, the KMD highlighted that rainfall amounts had increased significantly during the previous week (April 7-13), particularly in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, and North-eastern and North-western Kenya.

The department advised the public to remain weather-aware and prepare for the ongoing rain, especially in areas where heavy rainfall is expected.

The department also announced that Nairobi Metropolis could experience heavy rains in the next 24 hours, with isolated storms anticipated, particularly during the afternoon, evening, and morning hours.

As the rains continue, residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to minimize disruptions.
