Sylvia Mulinge: From Safaricom to MTN Uganda’s Top CEO

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Since stepping in as CEO of MTN Uganda in 2022, Sylvia Mulinge has been on a mission—one that’s turning the telecom giant into a powerhouse of growth, innovation, and customer-focused services.

Under her leadership, MTN Uganda has not only strengthened its dominance in the fiercely competitive telecom market but also racked up industry accolades that cement its status as a trailblazer.

Power Moves: Mulinge’s Impact on MTN Uganda

It’s no surprise that Mulinge was recently named Uganda’s Leading and Most Admired CEO in CEO East Africa Magazine’s 2024 survey.

Her ability to drive strategic growth while fostering innovation has made her one of the most influential corporate leaders in the region. And the results speak for themselves.

At the recent GLG gala, MTN Uganda walked away with multiple prestigious awards, including:

  • Group President and CEO Award – Y’ello Care for its ‘30 Days of Y’ello Care’ employee volunteer program, a social impact initiative transforming communities.
  • Million Dollar Award – Best OpCo of the Year, recognizing MTN Uganda’s operational excellence in line with the ambitious Ambition 2025 strategy.
  • Value-Based Capital Allocation Award, a nod to the company’s smart investments that drive long-term stakeholder value.

From Safaricom to MTN: A Legacy of Success

Before taking the reins at MTN Uganda, Mulinge spent 16 years at Safaricom, Kenya’s largest telecom provider, holding key leadership roles such as Chief Consumer Business Officer and Chief Customer Officer.

Her expertise in mobile data, voice, and digital services played a major role in Safaricom’s digital transformation.

A University of Nairobi graduate with a background in Food Science and Technology, Mulinge started her career at Unilever before making her mark in the telecom industry.

Her transition to MTN Uganda in 2022 saw her succeed Wim Vanhelleputte, who moved to a regional role within MTN Group.

MTN Uganda is part of the larger MTN Group, which operates in 20 African countries, including South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and Rwanda.

With Mulinge at the helm, the company is not just maintaining its lead but redefining what it means to be a telecom giant in Africa.

Her leadership is setting new standards, proving that in the fast-paced world of telecommunications, innovation, customer focus, and strategic vision are the real game changers.
