TSC to Retrain Senior School Teachers Ahead of 2026 CBC Rollout

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a nationwide retooling exercise for senior school teachers in preparation for the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) at the senior secondary level.

According to an internal memo addressed to Regional and County Directors, the face-to-face training will run from July 28 to August 15, 2025, at designated venues across the country.

The initiative targets educators currently teaching in regular secondary schools, Special Needs Education (SNE) institutions, and vocational training centres.

“County Directors will be required to select teachers for retooling and trainers of teachers,” the memo reads in part.

The retooling programme is designed to align teachers with the new senior school pathways under CBC, which officially launches in January 2026 for Grades 10 to 12.

Teachers will be grouped into three broad learning areas:

  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) – covering both pure and applied sciences, as well as technical subjects.
  • Social Sciences – including languages, humanities, and business studies.
  • Arts and Sports Science – encompassing visual and performing arts, music, and physical education.

TSC has indicated that the selection of participants will be based on the current number of teachers on duty in each institution.

Final Phase of CBC Rollout

The upcoming senior school phase marks the final stage in the phased implementation of CBC, which has already been rolled out at the pre-primary, primary, and junior secondary levels.

The first CBC cohort is expected to transition to senior secondary in January 2026.

The retooling exercise is a critical component in ensuring teachers are well-prepared to deliver the CBC framework, which emphasizes hands-on learning, creativity, critical thinking, and the nurturing of learners’ individual talents.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that continuous professional development will be key to the successful transition from the traditional 8-4-4 system to the CBC model.
